A simple breakdown of what ₹5,000 a month can become with a SIP, why the first years feel slow, and what matters more than picking the perfect fund.

How much does a ₹5,000 SIP grow in 10, 15 and 20 years?

Five thousand rupees a month. That's a couple of dinners out, one online sale you didn't need, or a phone EMI. Now let's see what the same money does when you put it in a SIP and leave it alone.

The quick answer

If you invest ₹5,000 every month and your fund grows at an average of 12% a year, here is roughly where you land:

TimeYou investIt can grow toGrowth on top
10 years₹6 lakhabout ₹11.6 lakhabout ₹5.6 lakh
15 years₹9 lakhabout ₹25.2 lakhabout ₹16.2 lakh
20 years₹12 lakhabout ₹50 lakhabout ₹38 lakh

Look at the last two rows again. Between year 15 and year 20 you add only ₹3 lakh of your own money, but the total almost doubles. That is compounding doing the heavy lifting.

Why the first years feel slow

In the first few years, most of your balance is just your own money. The growth is small because it's growing on a small base. Most people quit here. They check the app, see ₹62,000 after a year and think nothing is happening.

The magic shows up late. Your returns start earning their own returns, and the curve bends upward. If you stop in year 5, you never see the part that makes a SIP worth it.

What if returns are lower?

12% is not a promise. Markets go up and down, and some years are negative. So let's be careful and run the same SIP at 10%:

  • 10 years: about ₹10.3 lakh
  • 15 years: about ₹20.9 lakh
  • 20 years: about ₹38.3 lakh

Still more than three times what you put in over 20 years. The lesson stays the same. Time in the market matters more than finding the perfect fund.

Three things that make a bigger difference than the fund

Start now, not "when salary increases". Every year you wait cuts the end number more than a small increase in amount can fix.

Increase it every year. If your salary goes up by 10%, raise your SIP by 10% too. This one habit can push your final amount far above the table above.

Don't stop in a crash. When markets fall, your ₹5,000 buys more units. People who keep going through bad years are usually the ones who end up with the big numbers.

Try your own numbers

Every person's amount and timeline is different. Plug in your own monthly amount and years in the free SIP calculator and see the curve for yourself. Then check what inflation does to that future number, because ₹50 lakh in 20 years will not buy what ₹50 lakh buys today.

Five thousand a month is not small money. But it is also not too big to start. The only real mistake is waiting.

This is for education only, not investment advice. Mutual fund returns are not guaranteed and can be negative. Read the scheme documents or speak to a SEBI-registered adviser before investing.
